SuRay, a Books Inside co-founder, recently discovered that the jail in Salinas, California was pretty much without books. Rudy Eugenio, the librarian at the jail, said that, in the past, independent book sellers provided the jail with a consistent flow of used and over-stocked books. In recent years, however, with the dwindling number of independents, he lost his sources and was relying on a few donations and whatever he could personally buy. Between SuRay's local contacts and boxes shipped from Salt Lake City, the Salinas jail now has about 800 paperbacks. We are currently looking for on-going souces and contacts in Monterey County to keep the jail well-supplied.
Note: We are also on the lookout for other prisons and jails in need of books.
